Among the English medieval tiles in the British Museum that especially interested Mercer was a small group of low-relief tiles originally found at the ruins of Castle Acre Priory in Norfolk, England. This tile is called Vicar of Stowe. The Latin inscription translates “Pray for the soul of Father Nicholas, of Stowe, Vicar.”
